Limited slip differentials (LSD's) stop one wheel from spinning much faster than the other (or one set of wheels in the case of centre-diffs). This can be a severe problem where lots of power is concerned as kinetic (or sliding) friction is less than static friction, so without driver input the other wheel will get barely any drive and power will be wasted. Not so with a limited slip differential. Additionally, LSD's provide better cornering control, no matter what the drive layout and are essential for drifting.
